About the Authors

Art Wolfe is one of the most renowned and highly published nature/wildlife photographers of our time. From his hometown Seattle, for over three decades he has traveled widely on all seven continents, gathering images of the world's wildlife, landscapes, and Native cultures. In his career, Wolfe has received numerous accolades for his photography, including the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography, and the first Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society for his work in support of the national wildlife refuge system. He has been hailed by William Conway, president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, as "the most prolific and sensitive recorder of a rapidly vanishing natural world." Wolfe's photographs have appeared in hundreds of magazines and books worldwide, and he has published more than 50 books, including Migrations, Rainforests of the World, The High Himalaya, Africa and The Living Wild.

As a young man in Colorado, Art Davidson lived to climb mountains. His first book, Minus 148: The First Winter Ascent of Mount McKinley, has become a classic of mountaineering literature. His life-work led him to cultures throughout the world, and from those searches he has published numerous magazine articles and books. In Endangered Peoples, he chronicles the struggles of indigenous peoples; in The Circle of Life, he explores the world of human ritual. Davidson has collaborated with Art Wolfe on several books, including Alakshak: The Great Country, a spectacular and poignant book about Alaska, and Light on the Land, which features creation mythology from many cultures. Davidson also wrote the hightly acclaimed In the Wake of the "Exxon Valdez" and produced the notable film Our Land--Our Life. He lives with his wife and children in the mountains near Anchorage, Alaska.
